Grammar explainer

Nine prepositions take either accusative or dative depending on meaning: an (at/on), auf (on top of), in, über (over/above), unter (under), vor (in front of/before), hinter (behind), neben (next to), zwischen (between). Rule: accusative after movement/directed action (wohin? — where to?): Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch (I put the book onto the table). Dative after static location (wo? — where?): Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch (The book is lying on the table). The verbs legen/liegen, stellen/stehen, hängen/hängen, setzen/sitzen, legen/liegen embody this movement vs. location contrast.
