Grammar explainer

When a main clause expresses desire, hope, or need directed at another subject, the subordinate clause uses the present subjunctive: Quiero que vengas (I want you to come). Two conditions must hold: different subjects in the two clauses, and a trigger verb expressing will or desire. If the subjects are the same, use infinitive instead: Quiero venir (I want to come). Common triggers at this level: querer que, esperar que, necesitar que, preferir que.
